Okay so I found some data here that I am super stoked about basically I really want to map the top five suppliers of cager conventional weapons and their largest recipients I also want to do the top five suppliers of major conventional weapons and their largest recipients from ten years ago so I've got this data one online I did a google search and I found this very authoritative looking paper Lord knows how accurate it really is but I'll cite it on my map and other people can figure that out and the trick is how do I get this from here into Excel now there are a couple ways of doing this one way is to simply select and copy the data like this let's go to excel and hit a new Excel workbook paste but then it kind of comes in all wonky so what I mean by wonky is basically if I click here these aren't in separate columns they're all in one column if I double click this it shows you it's all one column so we don't want to do that the other option that I want to show you today is this if you have Adobe Acrobat Pro not just the viewer on your computer but the professional version you can basically go down here and hit save so right now I'm in the web browser and we'll call this recent trends and arms trade sure I'm sure the.
NSA is wondering what the heck I'm doing and then you can just open it in not in the browser but I'm showing finder and we will double click this and open it in Acrobat Pro Acrobat pros and maybe actually you can even do this in Adobe Acrobat just on your desktop I don't know but here we go we have thumbnails etc let's find the page with our tables and I want to basically extract this page and now I have only this page and this is what we want we're going to go to file/save has other spreadsheet Excel workbook and I'll keep the same name let's hit save let's go to Excel open something like going to hit open and now notice that all of these are in their own cells so it could basically tell where there were divisions where there was a table if it interpreted that so all we have to do now is get rid of all this other superfluous flotsam and we have a nice little table and we can start playing with it and potentially join it under supplier alright so that's how you take a table from a PDF and make it into a an Excel table that can be joined the notice there are some little issues here some of these cells here are joined you'll have to split these but nothing too major you could also just copy and paste alright thanks for watching.
